Educating and inspiring the next generation of engineers is one of SwanSEDS’s core principles.
Through our outreach programme, members work with local students to give them opportunities we never had, sparking curiosity, creativity, and confidence in STEM.
We’ve partnered with schools across the England and Wales to teach hands-on engineering skills, from designing vehicles to manufacturing and testing them. The team looks forward to continuing to engage and inspire students in the years ahead!
The 24-25 academic year saw our team grow and the projects we supported took off!
With the launch of a Welsh UKROC regional this year, SwanSEDS supported four new school teams from Haverfordwest High and Ceredigion PRUs. We ran online sessions on rocket design in OpenRocket, provided hands-on build support, and helped all teams successfully launch — taking the top four places! The winning team reached the national finals, and our mentoring has since inspired Haverfordwest High to start its own rocketry programme. We’ve also created a SwanSEDS Guide to OpenRocket to support future students.
SwanSEDS were invited by Oundle School to run a full-day rocketry workshop for Year 12 students, followed by an evening talk open to all. During the workshop, the students learned to design and build rockets using OpenRocket before successfully launching their creations. The evening presentation covered topics from rocket history and the space race to propulsion, stability, and engine types, sparking great engagement and plenty of questions. The students were keen to ask questions and wanted to know how to get involved!
For International Women in Engineering Day, SwanSEDS visited Oundle School again to run an introductory rocketry workshop with students from across the Peterborough area. The session covered the basics of rocket design and flight before teams built and launched their own bottle rockets. The students were enthusiastic and creative, experimenting with different designs to achieve the best flights. It was awesome to bring our own female engineers to inspire the next generation!
Our Olympus Rover team visited Brynmill Primary School to run a hands-on workshop all about Mars rovers and design. After learning about real Mars missions, students designed and built their own wind-up rovers using cardboard, pencils, and elastic bands — exploring concepts like wheel design, terrain, and testing. The session was a huge success, with students fully engaged and experimenting creatively.
We are excited to have partnered with British Summer Schools to
run engineering lessons for their students. With weekly projects ranging from rockets to rovers, looking at design, electronics and teamwork! Every student created a hands-on product, developing not only their engineering skills but also their English language skills. We’re looking forward to working with them again this year!
